Forest ecosystem services

Food, water, climate regulation and space to unwind

Forest ecosystem services are the benefits that forests provide to people. Provisioning services include timber, mushrooms, berries and game meat. Regulating services help store carbon, cool the landscape, retain and filter water, and protect soil from erosion. Cultural services offer recreation, learning and inspiration. These benefits depend on supporting processes, such as soil formation and nutrient cycling, and on the diversity of forest life.

Science starts with a question.

Forest ecosystem services

Similar timber stocks, more broadleaves: what a Czech forest study revealed

Around 340 to 343 cubic metres of living timber per hectare. That was the narrow range of adjusted estimates across three Czech forest groups classified by conservation designation. No statistically significant difference in standing volume was detected. Clearer differences emerged in broadleaf representation and standing deadwood occurrence.

Forest ecosystem services: what forests provide

A basket of mushrooms, water soaking into the soil and a walk in the shade reveal different forest benefits. This introduction to ecosystem services connects everyday experience with research on Czech households and public perceptions.
